When a retired couple downsized to a bungalow on the Wirral, they wanted more than just a practical home, they wanted to future-proof it while making it the heart of the family for when their children and grandchildren came to visit.
The main challenge was working within the footprint of a single-storey home. But with clever design choices, we were able to reconfigure the layout to create a brighter, more open space that worked far better for their lifestyle.
To improve the flow of the home, we removed a chimney breast in the living room, which allowed us to form a long hallway running from the front door to the back of the house. This instantly transformed the way the home worked, eliminating the need to walk through the living room to reach other rooms. We also reworked the storage, removing an old boiler cupboard to free up valuable space. The lost storage was replaced with a large pantry cupboard in the new kitchen design, giving the couple more practical and usable storage than before.
The kitchen was relocated to the rear of the property, opening onto the garden as a bright, welcoming kitchen-diner that was perfect for family gatherings. The bathroom was moved to the old kitchen space, creating a larger and much more functional layout. By carefully reconfiguring the space, we maximised every square metre, achieving a bigger, brighter kitchen and bathroom as well as a proper hallway, all within the existing footprint of the bungalow.
The couple now have a true “forever home” that balances practicality with comfort. The once-cramped layout has been transformed into an open, light-filled space that is modern, functional, and ready to welcome family for years to come.
